Art of the Spirit: “Shades of the Madonna”
Nice to Barcelona
Matisse to Montserrat
September 20th – 29th, 2017
Join world-renowned artist and spiritual leader, Br. Mickey McGrath OSFS, on a 10-day discovery of Beauty, Art and Spirituality in the South of France and Barcelona, two of the most artistically-inspired places on Earth. This tour has been specifically crafted, creating a balance between pilgrim and artist destinations, spectacular scenery, beautiful villages, and of course glimpses of the Mediterranean! We visit three distinctively different locations, connecting with Saints and Sinners along the way, and drawing them into our experience.
Sacred Places and Spaces – Calendar for 2017
Brother Mickey scoured his sketchbooks from pilgrimages over the years to show us the holy ground of God’s creation. Each month features a different country and a sacred place of pilgrimage associated with it. From New Mexico to Ireland to Turkey, with many places in between, you will be reminded that all ground is holy wherever you happen to be, because God is everywhere, in everyone.
“A nation can be considered great when it defends liberty as Lincoln did, when it fosters a culture which enables people to ‘dream’ of full rights for all their brothers and sisters, as Martin Luther King sought to do; when it strives for justice and the cause of the oppressed, as Dorothy Day did by her tireless work, the fruit of a faith which becomes dialogue and sows peace in the contemplative style of Thomas Merton.”
Meet Bro. Mickey McGrath
Living and working in the most dangerous city in the United States, and one of the poorest, I have discovered new meaning for my talents and gifts; the revelation of unexpected beauty which crosses paths with the pain and challenges I see before me every day.
Bro. Mickey, an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales, is a popular and engaging presenter who happily travels to conferences, parishes, and retreat centers throughout North America to deliver the good news about deep and often whimsical connections between art and religious faith.
He is the author and illustrator of eleven books, many of which have received awards from Catholic publishing associations. His own articles, or articles about him, have appeared in America Magazine, Commonweal, St. Anthony Messenger, USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer and many diocesean newspapers around the country.
Since 1987, he has served on summer faculty at the Grünewald Guild in Washington State where he’s also a Guild Master.
A native of Philadelphia, Bro. Mickey currently lives and works in Camden, NJ and is parishioner at Sacred Heart Church, a parish within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Camden.
You’re invited to connect with him and join the conversation on Facebook, where you can also find new pictures in real time!
